Written by Matthew Coleman: My friend, Deedee, has taught hatha yoga over the past 30 years and has seen the energy and the aliveness that results in so many of her students. But this is not enough. What are we to do with this energy? How can we transform this energetic healthfulness into more happiness for ourselves and for all those around us that we interrelate with daily? The Buddhist/yogic philosophy tells us that we need to wake up to who and even what we really are if we are going to be happy and a proven method that can lead us to that state of total joyful wakefulness in the practice of loving-kindness and compassion.

I am a Buddhist meditation teacher and for the past five years have teamed up with Deedee to bring the loving-kindness and compassion meditations together with the energy of hatha yoga. Seeing the results of integrating these two ancient paths into an all day workshop has been truly heartwarming. Many yoga students hear the word 'meditation' and it sounds fascination, maybe mysterious or mystical - it's in all the yoga magazines. But it's hard to learn from a book and there are so many different kinds and ways to meditate, how do we find the right one? What we teach is from the 2,500 year old tradition of Buddhism. We start with this simple aspiration:

May I be filled with loving-kindness May I be well. May I be peaceful and at ease. May I be happy.

We work with this. We recite it in deep meditation, we recite it with concentration wile holding our yogic postures, we integrate it with our breath, we let our mind meld with the meaning of the words. We look at our everyday thoughts and ask whether they are positive and uplifting or do they go round and round, often spiraling downward? The teachings tell us that by breaking down the barrier between others and ourselves through the practice of loving-kindness and opening to the sufferings of others is the best way to uplift our spirits. When we feel we can touch the basic goodness within ourselves we begin to the process of reaching out to others: benefactors, friends, the neutral people in our lives and even the difficult individuals we encounter from time to time. Our meditations then start with:

May you be filled with loving-kindness May you be well May you be peaceful and at ease May you be happy

Alternating energetic yoga with the calmness of meditation back and forth throughout the day loosens the mind into letting to of fixed patterns and integrates the teaching of loving-kindness and compassion into our lives. This is not meditation-lite, it's deep and effective and life transforming and as you get up from your meditation cushion or yoga mat you can take this practice with you, enhancing your life and all those you come in contact with.

Matthew Coleman is a student and practioner of Tibetan Buddhism and has taught Buddhist meditation for 25 years. He lives with his wife Phyllis on salt Spring Island where he writes, gardens, kayaks and plays with his grandchildren.
